[mingle] nobody with a dream plays a background role
π§ WHO: Izumi Tachibana (
currysseur) & anyone and everyone who wants to see her act!
βοΈοΈ WHAT: #izumiavalonactingdebut0505!!! After a difficult battle against Hanahaki, Izumi and Kaika Company band together to give her the lead role in her very own play on her birthday! Come see how she does, chat to friends, give her birthday presents? IDK it's a mingle log, you can top level and do whatever you like (but warn where necessary!)
π WHEN: 5th May.
πΊοΈ WHERE: Kaika Company
β οΈ WARNINGS: I have Lots Of Feelings about Izumi acting ok
( she speaks the last line to the audience, (prop) sword in hand β it's a small part of a longer monologue, something Tsuzuru seems to have tailored especially to her own circumstances, about falling and getting back up, never letting your dreams die β and the words come out smoothly. For the first time since rehearsals started, her voice doesn't waver. There's no ache in her lungs or flowers in her throat suffocating her words.
For the first time in almost two months, she feels free.
Still, as the lights, the curtains, fall, and the world around her descends into silence and darkness for a moment, that worry comes back. She had managed it, hadn't she? There were mistakes β of course there were, that was the charm of a play β but nothing like the blunders she made back home. She didn't recite an entirely different part's lines, or pants anyone. She stood on stage and delivered the kind of performance she had long believed was out of her grasp as an actor.
... But what if she's just fooling herself? What if the audience saw the same clumsy, hammy girl who was told point blank she'd never improve. The girl who simply didn't have the raw, birthright talent to bloom on stage like others.
The seconds between the curtain descending and the first sounds of applause seem to be a lifetime. But soon enough, they're there. They're loud. As loud as they've been for any play they've hosted here in Kaika Theatre, and the heat of tears immediately pricks at her eyes even as a smile breaks out over her face.
She did it. She finally delivered a performance she can be proud of. One where the audience laughed because she wanted them to laugh, not because she tripped into a scene she wasn't meant to be in. Stumbling back out to take her bow feels hazy, dreamlike, and her hands clasp tightly around those of her costars, as though to keep herself upright as they make their way back out for that final hurrah.
It's only once she gets back to the wings that she stops fighting the tears pricking at her eyes, bursting into a relieved grin that's so wide it looks like it could break her face even as she cries, and immediately flings herself at the nearest Kaika member for a bone-crushing hug.
She'll catch up with the lingering audience members in a bit, but for now... )
Thank you, all of you...!

So it really should come as no surprise that he's still around after most everyone else, audience and actor alike, left for the night. Right now he's alone, staring in silence out into the empty seats - but judging from the rather large bouquet he's holding in his arms, he expects company to find him eventually. Or perhaps not him specifically, but the stage he stands upon.
Their passion for theater is alike in so many other ways, after all. So surely she'd be drawn here, too. ]

So she waves off the people ready for drinking with a quick I'll meet you later, I want to lock up! and doubles back in. Not because she's forgotten anything, but simply...
Simply because this is the stage, and there's nowhere else she feels quite so at home in this city.
And it shouldn't, doesn't, surprise her that Tsumugi is here β his absence had been noted and felt, even as she mingled with all the audience and other actors β same as she is. What she does notice is different, however, are the flowers. )
Did someone gift them to you? They're beautiful. ( She's smiling as she climbs the stairs to the stage, taking in the bouquet. What else could be a more fitting gift for Mankaika's florist than a gorgeous arrangement of flowers? And he more than deserves them for his performance. It was only through standing on this stage, with Tsumugi, with all the others, that Izumi could bloom like this.
She might have been the star for the night, but they're the lights which keep this theatre shining every day it's open. )

I'm glad you like them! [ And then, he holds the bouquet out to her. ] They're actually for you.
[ Like his performance on stage, he'd poured his heart and soul into this bouquet for her. As one of her actors, it's the least he could do to show his feelings of gratitude, in general and in this opportunity he'd had to act alongside her. And as the owner of his own flower shop, he couldn't give her something less than absolutely stunning. But more than those things, as her friend, he'd simply wanted to do this for her.
White and green alstormerias, to represent their friendship, her growth, and her achievements as a director and actress. Veronica, a promise to continue supporting her however he can, whenever she needs. White roses, a symbol of his deep respect for who she is and all she's been through to reach this stage.
And, of course, some beautiful blue larkspur, not as petals scattered across the floor but as whole, blooming flowers. ]
Good work, Izumi-san. [ It only feels right, to drop the title of "director" in a moment like this. ] And happy birthday.

( Natural inclinations to say this is more than she deserves are shelved in the face of the surprise knocking the breath out of her lungs. She doesn't know flower meanings, but she knows Tsumugi knows them, and knows he'll have picked each one with care and attention.
(Catch her searching all these flowers once she goes home.) )
Thank you, Tsumugi-san... ( she finishes the honourific, but there's a hesitance, a trailing off to the letters as she speaks them. )
Um. Would it be okay if I called you Tsumugi?
( It sounds a little foreign to say his name without any honourific, but after everything they've been through β as actor and director, as friends, as actor and actor β it feels stranger still to keep that honourific's distance between them. He's far more than simply her same age friend and employee now. He's an indispensable part of who she is as a person. )

Despite everything they've been through and all that he feels (tasuku's his dear childhood friend, but she- she's his best friend. easily. without a doubt in his mind or heart. and he loves her from the bottom of that very same heart.) he's still caught off-guard by her request. He can feel his face heat up, the surprise probably evident in his eyes.
But he blinks, shakes off that shock, and nods. ]
Of course! [ And then, a little more hesitantly: ] Then... may I call you Izumi?
catch me cryin in the club
sobs loudly with you

[Rinea is friends with a few of the theatre's actors; getting invited to their director's acting debut was just a matter of course. She's met Izumi just once, long ago... but seeing her on stage was a different impression entirely.
Rinea beams at her, taking her hand, nothing but sincere.]
You were radiant!

Th-thank you. ( Aaah, she wants to duck behind her hair but she can't. It's still tied up from the play. ) It's all thanks to my actors. I couldn't have done it without them.
( She knows that response sounds cliche to anyone who wasn't there, behind the scenes, but it's the simple truth. She'd acted for years before giving up, spent her whole life searching for a way to give the kind of performance her dad managed to bring out of his actors in the first generation of Mankai, and accepted she would never be able to.
Until Avalon. Until the actors at Kaika. ) They gave me lots of support and tips.

[Rinea is just being honest, but she's a little wistful too. Stages are so exciting! Rinea doesn't have acting aspirations, but she's a bit envious all the same. She wants to ask so many questions! But Izumi is the lady of the hour, and Rinea can't take up too much of her time. So she'll settle instead on just one.]
It looked like you were having fun. Were you?
no subject
And she's just been winging her way through directing, mostly. )
Oh, yes! ( that smile could power a whole city with its brightness. ) It's been a long time since I stood on stage. It was... Even better than I remembered.
( and, because Izumi's brain can work on exactly one track at any given time; ) ... Are you a performer?
( don't think you can hide that wistfulness around her, missy. )

[THIS CONVERSATION WASNT SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT HER?! HELLO]
You just made it look like such a grand time. I was admiring that!

Afterwards
Yesterday, however, his ghost subordinates ganged up on him and all but forced him to take today off and actually do something other than train and study magical tomes on his birthday. He eventually relented, and while he was wandering around trying to figure out where to go in the evening the advertisement for the current play caught his eye, so he spontaneously bought a ticket.
It was so worth it!! He completely forgot how much he always gets swept away by even just movies in the cinema, and a stage is a whole different kind of intense! He found himself rooting for the heroine so hard, he clenched his fists in multiple tense scenes. He clapped with everyone else in the end, very happy he decided to go, but as people start mingling and dispersing he's caught off guard when Izumi addresses him.]
Ah... it was good! Really good. Relatable, too!
[He's a stubborn bastard who alway gets back up when life kicks him down, so seeing her character prevail in the play was gratifying!]

As Sakuya-kun always says, the show must go on. And tonight it was her turn. Her turn to keep going.
And she's all but glowing with relief and pride in the aftermath, unable to keep her smile off her face when she gets positive feedback. Not just for her, but... )
That's thanks to our wonderful scriptwriter, Tsuzuru-kun! He crafts characters everyone can relate to.
( And may or may not have prodded her through the script. She's grateful for it. Never did she think she'd undergo the same, almost therapeutic acting experience as her Mankaika actors. )
Is this your first time seeing one of our plays?
( She doesn't think she recognises him, but maybe she just missed him in previous crowds? )

[He can't really understand how the troupe finds the inspiration to put their hearts into the theatre with the calamity literally hanging over all their heads, but some people are just born under an artistic star and need to be creative, he reckons. It's certainly good for the civilians, who need a sense of normalcy.]

If morale is all she and Kaika can offer, that's enough. She's happy with that.
(Not to say she hasn't been doing her best in terms of learning how to defend herself and others. While all her swordwork was geared to theatre tonight, she's come on leaps and bounds in actual swordfighting over the last few months.) )
Um... A few! ( and here she gives a specific number that her player does not have. ) We've also done a lot of street acts in between. They help our actors keep their skills up and promote the theatre to residents!
( And, because Izumi is Izumi; ) I hope you come again. This was a special edition play but our actors will resume normal activities soon.

[He couldn't tell the difference from a standard one, but he wonders if certain circumstances prompted it. Perhaps some heroic tale has been making the rounds and inspired it? Regardless, he does want to come again, though he's not making a commitment outright, given that certain missions and other circumstances can keep him occupied for weeks of time.
If he knew of Izumi's recent struggles, of course, he'd be a lot more elated at her leading role's success tonight - not least because he'd be amazed to see confirmation that someone's greatest love can be not a person but a cause.]

Director-chaaan!! You were amazing!! Ne ne, how do you feel ~!
[He asks not even in regards to the hanahaki but just in general. Her acting debut after wanting it for so long! She must feel like she's walking on air!]

I did it! ( Finally, an acting role she can be proud of. ) I'm so glad...
( Does she sound a little sniffly there? Maybe. Shh. )

You were so good, too! I was afraid I was gonna miss some of my lines 'cuz I couldn't look away from you ~

Don't oversell it! ( It's hard to scold someone effectively when your cheeks are pink from the compliment, isn't it? )

[He won't pick her up, but he does begin gently rocking them both in place.]
You worked really hard for this and it came out in your acting. The crowd would agree!
[Hehe!]

Izumi-san that was amazing! You did a wonderful job!
<3!!!
And this play proved it. She would have loved it no matter who among Kaika performed it, but being able to bring his words to life was a special kind of honour. So, as soon as he appears backstage, guess what?
Yeah, you getting hugged, Tsuzuru. She's high on the success and the ability to breathe in air without wanting to cough up petals. )
They loved your script!
( Of course they would, it was fantastic. )
I'm glad I got to perform it.
:D
I'm glad they did, but you really made it come to life!
[Even in this world, he's still pretty humble.]
I'm so happy to watch it! You did an amazing job! So how did you enjoy being on stage?
no subject
It was even more fun than I remembered. ( Seriously, had she simply forgotten the intensity and excitement, or was it the result of actually doing a job she could be proud of? ) And it went by so quickly.
( It does when you're waiting in the wings, too, but in a very different way. )
