The Fairy Queen sends out an invitation for all otherworlders to an eccentric party with ulterior motives that aren't necessarily bad.. after all, they're protecting players from a ritualistic curse cast by escaped convicts from the Elphame prison. But that doesn't mean it's the party's entirely safe either. |
CONTENT WARNINGS:
- 1st Prompt: Mild elements of body horror in the fairy queen's description (paragraph starting with "Opening the message"); this paragraph is description only and may be skipped without loss of content.
- 2nd Prompt: Ball prompts include reference to drugs, alcohol, smooching, and fake murder.
- 3rd Prompt: May have potential for mild body horror depending on player preference, as it features cynanthropy/lycanthropy.

Atop her head, a headpiece made of platinum formed into the tiniest branches, filled with leaves of precious stones- diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires, and moldavite trailing down in long chains that keep her hair out of her face. Her lips are just slightly parted, painted in what seems to be an enchanted design that shifts patterns as she moves, as if they were a green screened galaxy in real life. There is a stud in the bow of her lips, and the top of her clothing appears to be colorful, but is only visible toward the top of her frame, as her top is low-cut to account for the fungi. A number of small stitched scars are visible, but largely healed. She tilts her head slightly. Even though it's only a video recording, it feels as though she is looking directly at your character. "You are busy bees..." Whether or not your character understood what was actually said or their brain shut down in the middle of those barely benign instructions, they may additionally notice fairy circles made of tiny mushrooms start to crop up regardless of where they are in Avalon. ![]()
Once night falls, if a character dances in them they will be transported to a costume party within the ballroom of the fairy queen in Nicnevin. Costumes will be magically applied upon arrival, based on a favorite childhood fantasy. (Did they want to be an astronaut? A dinosaur? A cowboy? A cat? That's what they'll appear as.)
1. If your character or anyone they know uses your character's name or reveals enough information about themself, they will become unable to disobey the fairy queen in future events. They've technically been warned about this in the fairy queen's message, even if it wasn't easy to understand. B. Alternately, you can have your character's name be captured by a more mischievous party guest fae and play with that as you will. You can be released either by someone else killing your captured fae for you, or the fae saying your name backward. So if your character's name is Stevie, they would have to trick the fairy into saying Eivets. This option to NPC your own fae captor is endable on your own terms, but 1a will be on the fae queen's terms down the line.
3. Dancing, food (fairy food*), psychedelics and drink will be provided to those of age who want them throughout the night. If the partygoers don't seem to be having a good time or the party grows dull, the fairy queen (dressed in the award-winning submission to the Elphame Trader's contest some time ago) will make a demand participation in a party game. If your character is standing around and not participating in the general activities, they may be coerced to participate. Anyone may join willingly as well, of course. The following party games will be played throughout the night: |
Spin the Bottle, Elphame Rules: Fairies are quite randy creatures at times, and the first game played is none other than spin the bottle. The rules are as such: when it is your turn, you are blinded by fairy magic and must spin the bottle. Once the bottle stops spinning, the person the bottle lands on will kiss them. The person who is kissed must guess who from the circle kissed them; a correct guess will mean they stay in and the blindness spell will be lifted. An incorrect guess will eject them from the circle and they will wander around blind for the duration of the game until a winner is declared. Feel free to play out gameplay or your character needing assistance after being ejected from the game circle. |

Balloon Game: |

Helping to empower otherworlders to improve their chances of saving the world is the kind of task that can be a little.. subjective. A little questionable when it comes to consent, at times. After all, no one is here with their consent and no one was bonded with their familiar or given magic with their consent. What's a little more empowerment? Certainly, a group of imprisoned lycanthrope wizards seem to think they have something of a solution to increasing other worlders' potentials: a ritual using the Wolf Moon of January's full moon cycle to transform unprotected otherworlders into fellow cynanthropes or, in layman's terms, werewolves and other types of weredogs. Anyone not protected (at the party) will be affected by the curse ritual. |
| |
Cynanthropes in Avalon have the following characteristics:
If your character did not attend the party, left the fairy queen's party, or wasn't at the Red Springs (protected by the mysterious crystals that turn it red during the full moon-- conveniently for your excuse not to participate in either prompt if you want to opt out!) they will become a werewolf or weredog. |

But despite it being surprising, and that fact causing her to pause for a moment, Minako can still work with this.
So she just smiles. ]
Then we can do some ballroom dancing, if you want! Though you'll have to lead me. [ Because Minako over here? Totally not a ballroom dancer, in case her modern hyper-glittery idol outfit didn't already betray as much. ] Ooooooor we can do more modern dancing, and I'll show you how!
[ .. is there just a 'no dancing at all' option?
Apparently not. ]
It's all up to you!
no subject
[He's not getting out of this! And really, does he want to? What else is he going to do, just stand here sulking? (Yes. Yes he would.) It's just a matter of embarrassing himself in front of a strange, friendly, pretty girl, and that sucks, but he kind of already has, in his opinion. So . . .
Finally, he gives her a little nod.]
We can just do it both ways. I'll show you how to waltz, and you show me yours. Hell, the only reason I even know how to waltz anyway is because a girl taught me.
no subject
[ Minako is already holding out a hand. She is ready to get over to the dance floor!
Though, apparently, not before getting in yet another embarrassing remark. ]
Show me how a true wizard waltzes! [ The costume.. it keeps happening... ]
no subject
[Mage Society, not known for its happening parties! But he does crack a smile at this, taking her hand, a bit awkwardly. His hands are cold, as they usually are, but he's succeeding in not flinching from contact. Progress! They can totally do this!]
I was gonna introduce myself, but we can't go around doing that here, so I guess you've gotta call me Zelretch for tonight. That's so awkward.
no subject
But she's willing to take him at his word. At most of his word, anyway, since she's pretty sure that she can get him to have some fun tonight, proving the stereotype at least partially wrong.
Especially now she's got that hand in her own. There's no way back, and she may already be tugging him out towards the dance floor. ]
Hmm.. Really? I mean, you can call yourself anything you want here! [ Not that she minds calling him that - but it kind of seems like he minds. ] For example, you can call me V!
no subject
[He scoots out to the dance floor with her, lagging behind, but not so much that she actually has to drag him or anything. Once they're in a clear enough spot that there's room for it, Kadoc tugs his hand away just to move into a position across from her . . . from V. V! That's awesome, and he doesn't actually wanna be Zelretch tonight!
So, after a beat to think about it some more:]
Okay. You can just call me Norway. Long, stupid story, but it works.
[Ha! A private joke aimed at not one, but two of his friends.]
no subject
Sure, dude, you're Norway now. She can roll with that.
And she also freely gives her hands to him. If he wants to show her how to waltz first, then Minako will gladly follow her lead. She is ready. ]
Isn't it exciting? It's like dancing with some mysterious stranger! That's always what they do in great stories..!
no subject
. . . Do you know the story of the twelve dancing princesses?
no subject
[ Hm. Give her a moment to think about that. She's already searching her mind as she's repeating those words, but it doesn't seem like she's coming up with anything - if not just because her expression remains mostly blank as she's thinking.
Which is why, after a few moments, Minako just shakes her head as they're moving.
(Thankfully no toes are being stepped on here.. yet.) ]
No, I don't think I have. What is it about?
no subject
It's a German fairy tale. It's about a kingdom where the king has twelve beautiful daughters, who all share a bedroom with a door that locks from the outside. . . . Every night, the king locks the door on them for the night, to preserve their chastity. But every morning, their dancing shoes have been completely worn down to holes, and all twelve of them refuse to explain how they could possibly have worn out a pair of dancing shoes overnight. So the king offers his kingdom and one of the princesses to any guy who can spy on them and figure out their secret. Of course the guy gets put to death if he fails. It's always something like that in this kinda story.
no subject
Though apparently her initial judgement of this start of the story is just: ]
You know, that king sounds like a real jerk.
[ Listen, it's important enough to pipe up with it! It has to be said by someone here! Who does that to their own daughters? ]
no subject
Yeah, no kidding. . . . I've been into stories like this since I was a kid, just 'cuz I like reading about what people throughout history have passed down through the ages. But it's not like what that says about people is always good. Sometimes it just makes you wonder what the hell people were thinking when they made these up.
[He smiles, shyly. It's never the easiest time talking about his interests, but this isn't so bad. She's clearing listening!]
Should I keep going? Only if you want.
no subject
[ Please, no one can leave Minako hanging in the middle of a story. She's invested now! If she only hears the beginning, then she'll probably make herself go totally crazy by imagining to herself constantly how the rest of the story goes. ]
I need to know if that king will get what's coming for him, you know?
[ .. someone might end up disappointed here.
But at the very least Minako does seem all ears. Apparently she's entirely on the same line as Kadoc when it comes to the thought that these are super interesting. ]
no subject
So a lot of young princes give it a shot and fail, and get put to death. There's more than one version of this, but that's the original one. There's always a lot more gratuitous death in the oldest stories. But either way, an older soldier returning from a war hears about all this from an old lady he stops to help on his way back into the country. She gives him a cloak that makes him invisible, and some insider information: that he shouldn't accept any food or drink from the palace, and he should pretend to fall asleep when he's offered any. So the guy goes to the palace to present himself to the king and the daughters, and sure enough, one of them offers him a drink, which he throws away, and then he pretends to pass out.
no subject
That part about not eating or drinking.. That's just like here! That's just like right now!
[ Look at these dramatics she's putting up in her reactions to the story. ]
no subject
If people had reacted this way to Kadoc talking about his interests when he was growing up, he might have turned out a very different person. It's the kind of earnestness even his mind can't convince him is fake, which is saying a lot, since his brain loves to convince him of all kinds of stupid shit. But no, she's for real, and he feels good about it. It turns out it's pretty cool to have someone really into it for once. Not that he knows well how to react; he just smiles, in a slightly stunned kind of way. A placeholder smile on a face that doesn't know how to make the expression it needs for this girl.]
Heh. There's another story a lot like this one where the soldier's a woman and the princesses are just one prince. That one actually does involve faerie magic. Just like staying away from the food tonight. But it's funny, 'cuz in this story, it was way more mundane than that. It was just that the girls were drugging the guys who came to investigate them. Because the soldier didn't drink, he was able to stay awake, and when he heard commotion from the girls' room, he snuck in to follow them in his invisible cloak.
no subject
[ That's a bit of a let down. Not that it makes the story any less interesting, it's just.. it'd be kind of neat if the story was entirely about the same sort of situation as they're stuck in right now.
But it's definitely not enough to turn Minako away. She's still interested in this little mystery here. And despite the fact that drugging people is.. well, let's say, Not Great, she still can't help but add: ]
I think I kind of get why the girls did that. It's like they had one fun thing in life, and they didn't want that to be taken away from them by their dad..
[ Though she, at the same time, can't wait to hear what the soldier saw while following them! ]
no subject
[It's magic, it's Disney, it can be any random thing. A sparkling fantasy potion that definitely does not resemble roofies of any kind! . . . Now that Kadoc is pretty relaxed telling this tale, his dancing level is accordingly rising, and he even gives them both a little twirl.]
That's pretty much exactly what the soldier figured out, too. He snuck into the room only to see that a mysterious panel had opened in their floor, leading to a staircase, down to an underground secret passage. So he followed them and caught up pretty quickly. Eventually, they came out in a forest of trees with silver, gold, and diamond leaves. . . . The princesses obviously knew exactly where they were going, so he followed along and grabbed a silver leaf off a tree for proof. Eventually they led him right to this huge dance hall full of twelve handsome princes waiting to dance the night away.
no subject
Wait, they were hanging out with princes?! So it was a love story all along!
[ And Minako? She loves love stories.
Hence the sudden excitement over here. ]
no subject
[Oh no. She's so excited! So hype about romance! Kadoc's only experienced this level of Love Hype from Monika before . . . some people really are like this, huh? The actual ending to the story is going to be such a disappointment!]
no subject
.. well, I don't want to force you to change anything..
[ A surprisingly mature answer, though only a moment later Minako's eyes are growing bigger - and kind of shiny, like she's about to cry.
Can Minako just do this on command?! Whenever she want?! Who knows! It's a talent. ]
But are you saying that the ending isn't.. romantic..?
[ She's saying like the possibility of it not being romantic is the most terrible thing she has ever encountered in her life. ]
no subject
[Spoilers! For a centuries old fairy tale! This girl is so much. Kadoc likes her, because he has a certain fondness for women who are so much, but it's still so much. The expression on her face takes him aback a little . . . it's like she needs a hug about this or something.]
no subject
[ Because she could imagine that it might not have one. Fairytales don't always end in the most pleasant of ways, after all, no matter what people would have you believe. Minako knows it very well.
But it isn't her full answer. Even as they still dance, with him still guiding her, she still seems to hum like she's thinking.
In the end she adds: ]
It'd be nicer if there was true love. I think every story out there should end with that. [ Does that mean he should add it in there? Who knows. It doesn't sound like Minako is forcing him to, instead leaving the decision in his hands. ]
no subject
[Though she does come off as the type who would probably want a horror movie to also end with the main couple getting married happily and safely ever after.]
I guess the next part's pretty romantic depending on how you look at it. The princesses danced the night away with their princes until their shoes were worn down to holes. The same way the king found them every morning. It was one hell of a party, and it was happening right under his nose, but no one had any idea they were out having a good time instead of being controlled by their dad day and night. Except this soldier who'd just happened to figure out how to catch them. . . . So in the morning, right before the crack of dawn, the girls headed home the same way they came, and the soldier followed them. But when they got back, he decided not to tell the king right away what he'd seen.
[This part of the story is accurate. But even as he's telling it, Kadoc thinks of a way he could twist it, just a little, from here on out, to give it what she might see as a better ending. Hmmmm.]
no subject
Right away. [ She immediately picks up on that wording the other is using here. It definitely implies that the soldier might still tell the king later, after all.
And it's not like Minako is dumb, no matter how ditzy she might seem at times. She, too, can guess that it means the soldier probably does tell the king eventually in the original story..
.. but she's wondering if that's what he's going to go with here in the end. ]
So did he tell the king later? Or didn't he?
